Upton on Severn cemetery, Memorial to Major Martin 1874
21.03.1874
The Worcestershire Chronicle reports “ A very fine monument has just been placed in the cemetery at Upton-on-Severn, to the memory of the late Major Martin, of Ham Court. It consists of a cross worked out of a solid piece of white marble. The cross itself is round in form, and so much relieved from the body of the monument, that at first sight a person might think it was grafted on ; but, on a close inspection, it is plain to be seen how carefully it had been chiseled out of the solid block. The whole of the white marble is supported by a plinth of the most beautiful serpentine marble we ever had the pleasure of looking at ; and in this, care has evidently been taken to avoid a strong contrast of colour, so that the even tone of the serpentine, which rests on a stone base, makes the monument one of the most tasteful we have seen for some time. Mr. W. Forsyth, who designed and executed this monument, is evidently imbued with genuine Gothic feeling, for his monumental works are, without exception, appropriate and characteristic, and all accordant with the principles of Gothic architecture “
