The Builder has an article and engraving “This monument is erected to the memory of Mrs. Madelena Louisa Lance, the wife of the rector the Rev. J. E. Lance, rector of Buckland St. Mary. Mrs. Lance died shortly after giving birth to a child : the infant died also, and they were buried together. The church of Buckland St. Mary, in which the monument is placed, was recently built from drawings by Mr. B. Ferrey. The monument is executed in Caen stone by Mr. J. Forsyth, of London “
02.09.1863
The Taunton Courier reports “The Opening of the Church of Buckland St Mary……….combined with this screen stands the magnificent pulpit. …..in the north side of the sanctuary there is placed a mural recessed segmental arch, having deeply sunk mouldings, consisting of a memorial to the Rev. Mr. Lance’s first wife. The design is curious and striking; the coped gravestone is bursting asunder for the final resurrection, and the significance of this awful moment is well expressed by the skill of the artist Mr. Forsyth”
