St Mary's Church, Elmbridge 1870 - 1972

"Wednesday 07.09.1870 p2 & 3 Worcestershire Chronicle

DROITWICH
ELMBRIDGE CHAPEL. The whole of the chancel belonging to this little chapel has been re-arranged by Mr. Forsyth, the well-known sculptor, of
Worcester, by the order of the Rev. J. Amphlett, of Hampton Lovett. The blank wall at the east end has been covered by an exceedingly beautiful
reredos, executed in a masterly manner in Caen stone and different marbles. The old square red tiles of the chancel floor have been replaced
by some beautiful tiles, manufactured by Godwin, of Lugwardine. The altar table is new, and on it is intended to be placed a very handsome altar cloth.
The stone steps leading to the altar have been removed outwards, giving more room to the chancel, and giving place also to a new altar rail..
The old pulpit and prayer-desk have been removed, and a new stone pulpit, with carved panels bearing the emblems of the Evangelist, substituted.

On the south wall there was formerly a simple mural marble tablet, in memory of some members of the Penrice family. This tablet has
been taken down and a very handsome one, executed in Caen stone which is really a work of art erected in its stead. It stands out from the
wall a considerable distance, and is divided into two panels, to receive six inscriptions, with space left for a third. The panels are pure white marble,
divided by coloured marble shafts, and supported by a richly-carved base. the marble columns support finely carved capitals, above which and at
each corner appear two carved angels, the centre part being enriched with diaper; and there is inserted the arms of the family, carved in relief, with
the motto 'Dum Spiro Spero' (whilst we live we hope). The whole is terminated by a cross inlaid with various marbles. The whole of the work
does great credit to the taste and skill of Mr. Forsyth, and is another example of the fine specimens of art which that artist is continually
sending out of his establishment.

Sadly the reredos, pulpit and lecturn appear to have been removed
