Lincoln Cathedral, Memorial tomb for Hilton and de Wint 1864
09.12.1864
The Stamford Mercury reports “ A very richly-carved and handsome altar tomb, designed by Mr. Blore, of London, has just been erected…….it is in the memory of William Hilton, the celebrated painter and of Peter de Wint, his brother-in-law, also a painter, and the monument is supplied by the widow of the latter…..the panels are pure alabaster, and beautifully sculpted by Mr. Forsyth, London, from paintings by the deceased. The three in front are from subjects by Mr. Hilton, and are Mary anointing the feet of Jesus, from a painting in St Phillip’s church, college-hill, London; the crucifixion from a painting at Liverpool; and the raising of Lazarus, in Newark church. The end panel is from a drawing by Mr. de Wint, of the West front of Lincoln Cathedral, in the Sudbrooke collection”
My huge thanks to Jim Newton, one of the Vergers at Lincoln cathedral, who sent me the photos below and are used with his permission
