St John the Baptist, Eastnor, Worcs c1852 - 1854
Malvern based builder George McCann and Architect Gilbert Scott ( later Sir ) were working on the enhancement and restoration of this Church when Earl Somers asked them to take over the enhancement of Eastnor castle as well, sometime in 1852
The assumption, and this is just an assumption at present, is that they met a 19 year old William Forsyth, who was already employed by the team that had been decorating the castle from early 1852. William met his first wife, who lived locally, at this time and was married in Upton in 1853 so we know he spent time in this
area
We think McCann and Scott used William to carve the additions shown below to the Church and it was this work that convinced the Earl to ask William to work on the carvings in the main hall at Eastnor over the next few years. However, the work, especially the font, is remarkably good for one so young and there is much to
discover in just who, and when, this work was completed
