Sherborne Abbey, Abbey close Monument to G.D.W Digby 1885
George Digby, of Sherborne castle, paid for the majority of the 1850's renovation of Sherborne Abbey but he also contributed hugely to the area. The monument was designed by partners Richard Herbert Carpenter and Benjamin Ingelow and includes this inscription "To Memory of George Digby Wingfield Digby of Sherborne Castle who upon succeeding to a noble inheritance made it his first care to complete the rest of the Abbey Church and after a life of generous beneficence died full of years beloved by all classes of the Community. This monument is erected by Public Subscription MDCCCLXXXIV"
It should be noted that James Forsyth was responsible for the stone work on this memorial and not the statues
