St John the Baptist Church, Frome, 'Via Crucis'. 1866
When the Revd Bennett took over St John the baptist in 1852 it was in a terrible state of disrepair, and he devoted the rest of his life to renovating the church.
Unique in an Anglican church in the UK, is the Via Crucis ( 'Way of the Cross' ) carved in the church yard. This was achieved after Revd Bennett organised the purchase and demolition of several properties to allow the steps and carvings to be housed in a stone structure that leads from the street up to the North entrance

The Frome times has a long report on the completion of the work at St Johns Church “ After four years of incessant and energetic and devoted labour, the restoration of the Old Parish Church of Frome is at length complete ………entering through simple oak gates, we ascend by four broad flights of steps; but the visitor will stop by the way to examine the beautiful sculpture which is on the East side, and which portrays the awful journey of the saviour to the cross… “
