Monument to Lord Lyttelton, Worcester Cathedral, 1878

Lord Lyttelton was a Conservative politician and Lord Lieutenant of Worcester from 1839 to 1876 ; the Lyttelton 'seat' was at Hagley Hall, Worcestershire.

He was instrumental in raising funds for the 19th century restoration of Worcester Cathedral and his memorial sits opposite the one for the Earl of Dudley ( also by James Forsyth ) who provided most of those funds

Prone to depression he committed suicide by throwing himself down the stairs at the family home in Portland Place, London. Newspaper reports of the period mention this monument

24.08.1878
The Worcestershire chronicle reports “A monument in memory of the late Lord Lyttelton has just been completed and will shortly be removed from the studio of Mr. J. Forsyth, the sculptor, to its destination in the nave of Worcester Cathedral. It is intended to harmonise with the beautiful pulpit presented to the Cathedral by the Earl of Dudley, executed by the same sculptor, of Baker Street, London”

28.09.1878
“The magnificent memorial is now erected Worcester Cathedral in the memory of the late Lord Lyttelton, designed by the late Sir Gilbert Scott, and just executed by Mr. Forsyth of London”
